Made entirely by hand, the miniature "Jonah in the belly of the whale" ("Friday") is a small work of art. The lamp (lampada), cast from tin and processed by the blackening method, depicts the old Testament prophet Jonah, who was swallowed by a whale.
The plot of this miniature is based on an ancient story that happened to a man named Jonah. One day God ordered Jonah to go to the city of Nineveh and preach there, so that the people of Nineveh would be reformed from their evil deeds. But Jonah did not listen to God, because he considered those people enemies of the Lord and his people, and decided to flee - he got on a ship and sailed to sea.
At this time a great storm arose on the sea, and the shipwrights, being afraid, began to pray, each in his own way, and Jonah fell asleep. The storm did not stop, so the ship's captain woke Jonah, and asked him to also pray to his God for salvation. The shipwrights cast lots to find out who had caused the trouble. The lot fell on Jonah. Then Jonah told the shipwrights who he was and why he was on this ship, and advised them to throw him into the sea to save themselves, because it was he who had angered the Lord. The shipwrights did not want to do this, but the storm did not stop. And they began to ask God not to impute to them the death of an innocent man, and they threw Jonah into the sea, doing God's will. And the sea subsided.
And Jonah was swallowed by a great whale, and he was in the belly of the whale for three days and three nights, and prayed:
"...I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.
For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.
I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.
When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.
They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.
But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.»
(Jonah 2: 2-9)
And by the will of God, the whale vomited Jonah on dry land.
The deep meaning of this biblical story is wonderfully conveyed in the plot of the miniature – while the lamp is burning, Jonah's prayer from the belly of the whale ascends to the Lord.
