Made entirely by hand and artistically painted, the miniature depicts Saint Victor of Damascus-in military dress, with a spear and shield. Victor served in Damascus (Syria) in the army of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius in the second century. During the persecution of Christians in 175, he refused to make sacrifices to the gods of Rome, and was subjected to terrible torments. But the faithful refused to sacrifice to idols – even the torturers were convinced of the omnipotence of the Lord and the truth of the Christian faith.
Saint Victor of Damascus is revered as the patron Saint of warriors.
