Made entirely by hand and artistically painted, the miniature depicts a mounted trumpeter-jaeger. Guides of the Italian army (Jaegers), created in 1796 by order of General Bonaparte, served as an escort (personal guard) of the commander-in-chief, and were distinguished by their bravery and loyalty. Often guides acted in battles as shock cavalry units, while not leaving their main function-to ensure the safety of the commander. The trumpeter in the unit performed an important function (the function of communication) - gave loud bugle signals that notified soldiers in battle of the commander's commands. Jaeger grew long sideburns and braided their hair.
