Made entirely by hand and artistically painted, miniature depicts a horse tenant of tulumbasy. Tenants - the name of one of the categories of service people in the Russian Kingdom. Tenants were usually nobles and boyars children, children of writers and attendants. They performed the functions of the guard troops and various service assignments, had to always live in Moscow and be ready for service and war. In the middle of the XVII century in Moscow there were about two thousand residents. In historical sources, residents are mentioned from the XVI century.
This tenant in his military equipment has two tulumbas – small percussion instruments used in the troops to give various signals. For strikes in tulumbas used a special kind of lash – a short wooden handle, which was attached to a thick (or braided) belt, at the end of which was a woven club or ball of belts. The name of this whip, Wasaga.
